And don’t worry, we keep the atmosphere relaxed and welcoming, with plenty of space for questions and laughs.

How Our Mums & Bums Antenatal Classes Work

Our antenatal/prenatal classes aren’t a long lecture you sit through half-asleep. They’re interactive, practical, and designed to give you the confidence you need for birth and baby care.

We meet over two Saturdays, with each session running about five hours (including breaks for stretching, questions, and lunch). The groups are kept small and personal (with a maximum of four couples in a class), so you get plenty of attention and space to ask what’s on your mind.

Expect a mix of hands-on demos, short videos, downloadable guides, and open Q&A sessions. Partners are not only welcome, but they’re encouraged to join, because parenting really is a team effort.

After the course, you’ll also have access to a WhatsApp support group and the option to book one-on-one guidance at our clinic if you’d like extra help.

Antenatal Class One: Pregnancy & Birth

In the first class, we focus on the changes that occur during pregnancy and preparing for labor and delivery. You’ll learn what to expect during birth, your options, and how to feel calm and confident on the big day.

Alongside these core sessions, we also host Next Bioscience. Their team discusses stem cell banking, explains what it entails, and addresses any questions you may have. Parents often find it incredibly insightful and helpful to hear about stem cell banking directly from the experts before making a decision.

Session 1: Welcome & What to Expect

This is where the nerves melt and the fun begins.

We start on a warm and friendly note, introductions, a few laughs, and a chance to settle in. You’ll quickly see why antenatal/birth prep classes make such a difference, and why so many parents say, “I wish I’d done this sooner!”

We’ll walk you through how the sessions work. Think of it as a safe space to learn without judgment. Our ground rules are simple: no question is silly, every birth choice is respected, and everyone’s experience matters.

And because support shouldn’t end when the class does, you’ll get access to our WhatsApp group and follow-up guidance to keep you feeling confident after you leave.

Session 2: Pregnancy Basics

Where myths meet facts, and the “what’s happening to me?” questions finally make sense.

We’ll give you a clear picture of how pregnancy unfolds by trimester, including what’s changing in your body and how your baby is growing. You’ll also learn the basics of eating well and choosing safe supplements, without turning every meal into a maths lesson.

Finally, we’ll cover safe movement in pregnancy. During this session, we will talk about simple ways to stay active, ease discomfort, and prepare your body for labour, along with guidance on when it’s best to get medical clearance.

Session 3: Common Discomforts & When to Get Help

Because pregnancy is magical… but also comes with heartburn at 2 AM.

This session helps you tell the difference between what’s normal in pregnancy and what needs medical attention. We’ll cover the common discomforts most moms face (and simple ways to ease them), point out symptoms that look scary but are usually harmless, and introduce a few medical conditions worth being aware of.

Most importantly, we’ll highlight the red flags that mean it’s time to call your doctor right away, so you leave feeling informed but not overwhelmed.

Session 4: Understanding Birth & Your Options

Because there’s no one “right” way to meet your baby.

This session is designed to help you understand birth and your options. We’ll cover how labour begins, the stages it moves through, and the different birth pathways like vaginal, induction, assisted, and C-section. In South Africa, where C-sections are common, we give them the same focus as vaginal birth, so you know exactly what to expect either way.

We’ll also explore pain relief options, ranging from natural techniques to medical treatments, and explain how your care team monitors safety and intervenes if plans need to be adjusted. To round it off, we’ll touch on delayed cord clamping and how to create flexible birth preferences that reflect your wishes without locking you into a specific plan. Our antenatal/prenatal class will leave you feeling ready for birth day, no matter which path it takes.

Class Two: Recovery & Baby Care

In the second class, we shift focus to life after birth. From your own recovery to feeding, newborn care, and baby health, this is where you’ll gain the practical skills to make those early weeks and months less daunting and more joyful.

Session 5: After Birth Recovery & Mental Health

Because looking after yourself is just as important as looking after your baby.

This session focuses on the early weeks after birth, a time that often feels like the steepest learning curve. We’ll talk through physical recovery (from bleeding and stitches to when to call for help), the reality of sleep and fatigue, and how to manage expectations with kindness.

We’ll also cover emotional well-being, from the short-lived baby blues to recognising postnatal depression and knowing where to find support. Finally, we touch on postnatal contraception, since fertility can return sooner than most parents realise.

Session 6: Breastfeeding Confidence

Because feeding your baby should feel natural, not stressful.

This session is about building confidence in feeding, regardless of the path you choose. We’ll explain how milk is made and what to expect in those first feeds, then share practical tips for latch, feeding patterns, and routines so you know what’s normal.

You’ll also receive guidance on nutrition while breastfeeding and how to troubleshoot common challenges, such as soreness, engorgement, or blocked ducts. For parents who use formula, we provide practical advice and support, too, because feeding your baby with love matters more than the method.

Session 7: Baby Care Essentials

Because babies don’t come with an instruction manual, but they can come with a prenatal/birth preparation class.

This session is all about feeling calm and capable with newborn care. We’ll cover the everyday basics like nappy changing and cord care to bathing, swaddling, and burping, in a way that feels simple.

We’ll also look at newborn sleep, including safe sleep practices and what “normal” really looks like in those early weeks. By the end, you’ll see that your baby isn’t as fragile as they seem, and you’ll have the confidence to handle the daily routine with ease.

Session 8: Baby Health & Safety

Because Google can’t always tell you if it’s normal, but we can.

This final session focuses on preparing you for common baby health concerns. We’ll discuss everyday concerns like jaundice, reflux, colic, and sniffles, including what’s normal, what typically passes, and when to consult your doctor.

We’ll also cover the serious red flag of fever in a newborn, explaining why any temperature of 38°C or higher in a baby under three months needs immediate medical care.

Finally, we’ll look at immunisations/vaccinations in South Africa, why they're important, what’s on the national schedule, and what to expect at each visit, including which reactions are normal and when to seek advice.

We’ll guide you to ongoing support with baby wellness visits and vaccine services at Mums & Bums, so you leave class knowing exactly where to turn for your little one’s health needs. Our antenatal/prenatal classes at Mums & Bums in Centurion are designed to give you calm before baby arrives.

In practice, there’s no real difference. All three terms describe classes that help you prepare for pregnancy, labour, birth, and those first weeks with your baby. Whatever you call them, the goal is the same: giving you knowledge, confidence, and support for the journey into parenthood.

Do antenatal classes help with birth preparation?

Yes, antenatal classes are designed to prepare you for labour and birth. At Mums & Bums, we cover how labour starts, what the different birth pathways look like (including C-sections, which are very common in South Africa), and the pain relief options available.
