MORNING-AFTER PILL VS. COPPER IUD:
Which One Is Right For You?
There are two main types of emergency contraception available in South Africa, the morning-after pill and the Copper IUD.
Examples: Norlevo®, Ella® (Ulipristal Acetate)
The morning-after pill temporarily delays ovulation so that no egg is released to be fertilised. It’s most effective the sooner it’s taken, ideally within 72 hours, and up to 5 days for some types.
Effectiveness: ~85–98% depending on timing.
Available at: Mums & Bums Centurion.
Best for you if:
-
You had unprotected sex within the last few days.
-
You can’t (or prefer not to) have an IUD inserted.
-
You want a quick, non-invasive option.
