Mums and Bums Mother and Baby Clinic offers midwife-led pregnancy care.

This Means:

We do not deliver babies. We purely offer pregnancy care.

If you are on medical aid, you will be referred to a private provider of your choice for birth. If you are a cash-paying patient, you will be referred to your nearest appropriate state facility or a private provider of choice (if you are willing to pay cash).

We do not offer ultrasounds during our appointments.

• Ultrasounds are done with our ultrasound partner, LifeScan Studios.

• Please contact them at 076 521 3222 and have an ultrasound done before your appointment with us (if this cannot be done, please let us know).

• We use a Fetal Doppler to listen to the baby's heart, but you will not be able to see a picture.

• All details regarding your ultrasounds will be communicated at your first appointment.

We only offer low-risk pregnancy care.

If, after your appointment, it is established that your pregnancy is high-risk (e.g., high blood pressure, twins, or other pregnancy related problems), you will be referred to an appropriate provider for the remainder of your pregnancy appointments.

All patients attending a pregnancy check-up for the first time must do antenatal blood work.

In accordance with the South African Maternity Care Guidelines, all pregnant women must have the following blood work done:

• HIV test

• Syphilis test

• Blood typing (if necessary)

• Iron studies (if necessary)

These tests will incur an additional bill from Ampath Laboratories (usually around R500.00 depending on what needs to be done). Payment can be made in one of the following three ways:

1. Claimed directly from your medical aid.

2. Paid upfront at Mums & Bums Clinic (and we will draw the blood for you).

3. Paid upfront at an Ampath Laboratories branch (and they will draw the blood for you).
